FRIC webinar: Fire safety challenges of green buildings and attributes
In this invited webinar, Fire safety challenges of green buildings and attributes will be presented.
Speakers: Margaret McNamee (Lund University) and Brian J. Meacham (Meacham Associates).
The webinar is free, open for all and will be held in English.

Abstract: Over the past thirty years or so, there has been significant focus on reducing the carbon footprint of the built environment, including an increasing emphasis on making buildings more sustainable or ‘green’. Particular attention was given to energy efficiency, use of alternative energy sources, and reduction in material usage. About fifteen years ago, some in the fire safety community began to be concerned about whether ‘green’ materials, systems, technologies and features (‘green’ attributes of buildings) presented fire safety challenges to occupants and first responders, particularly in ways that differed from ‘traditional’ construction attributes might. In 2012, the Fire Protection Research Foundation (FPRF) of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) in the USA supported a literature review focused on this topic. In 2020, the FPRF sponsored an updated information review to benchmark how the landscape of fire safety challenges of ‘green’ attributes of buildings has changed since 2012. A summary of the key findings from this 2020 review is provided in this webinar.

The webinar will start with a presentation of the results from the project, about 50 minutes, and will be followed by about 5-10 minutes for questions and discussions with the researchers.

The webinar will be recorded and published.

The topic is highly relevant for many of the ongoing activities in FRIC, and we hope that FRIC partners and many others will be interested to hear from these internationally acknowledged researchers in the field.
